Metal Roofing FAQs

The current extreme weather trend is very hard on regular asphalt shingle and fibre glass or board roofs, requiring more frequent replacement. Why invest again in a disposable asphalt or fibre glass shingle roof?

In contrast, metal is a very practical solution. It lasts dramatically longer.

All our clients give the same feedback: the sound level is the same as with an asphalt shingle roof.

Only regular metal roofs that are installed with strapping (wooden slats) can be noisy. The gap this creates acts as a drum. A Roofs of Steel roof is installed directly onto your current roof. There is no gap.

Our roof is one quarter the weight of a new asphalt shingle roof. In addition, asphalt shingles absorb a lot of rain. This puts a lot of pressure on your home’s rafters, frame, and foundation. That will no longer be the case with our roof.
As with the usual poor versus good quality scenario, the initial price is higher but then you save a lot of money in no time. Asphalt shingles used to last decades because they contained asbestos. Since this was banned, their life expectancy reduced a great deal, regardless of what material was substituted, what it was called, or what the warranty stated. And now with the ever increasing climate changes, those roofs need replacing even faster. You never stop paying.

With a Roofs of Steel roof, you are finished paying. It will last a lifetime. In addition, you will realize up to 35% in energy savings.

Our Kynar500 finish is US Energy Star approved. It results in energy savings of up to 35%. Easily 65% of radiant energy enters your home through your asphalt or fibre glass shingle roof. A Roofs of Steel roof solves that immediately. The savings really add up.
A lot of smart homeowners upgrade important selling points like the roof, to be able to get more money for their house. Most real estate agents are focused on a fast turnaround, so they do not like you spending money, especially when it means waiting another couple of months. That is why they typically keep recommended changes to a minimum, even though an upgrade would put more money in your pocket. If you would like to make money in real estate, then this is an easy one. The roof is often the most important exterior architectural feature. Whatever you do with your roof, sets the tone for everything else. A Roofs of Steel roof dramatically increases curb appeal. And prospective buyers know they will never have to replace the roof again. Our warranty is transferable.

Take your real estate agent’s suggested asking price and give it a healthy boost.

Asphalt or fibre glass shingles are currently being replaced every 8 to 10 years on average. Not only does this add many tons of waste to landfills, but these materials also contain harmful chemicals. Metal roofs solve both those problems. They can also be recycled when they finally need replacing after a long lifetime.
Asphalt and fibre glass shingles can crack and split during hail. Aluminum is a soft metal that dents easily. But our roof has the highest hail and dent resistance rating in the industry.

In worst case scenario during a particularly extreme hailstorm, if there are one or two small dents, then these would simply blend in with the beautiful texture of the cedar or slate profiles.

Yes, you can walk on our roof because it is installed directly onto your existing roof. Most other metal roofs are installed using wooden slats (strapping) that create a gap. This gap means that you can only walk where the slats are. With our roof, you don’t have to worry about that.

Not with our roof! The panels are attached with interlocking tornado clips (yes, they can withstand winds of up to 200 km/h). The clips allow the panels to expand and contract without moving the clips. And if the clips don’t move, then the screws holding them down are not wiggled loose over the years. That means no maintenance. And no, other metal roofs do not have interlocking tornado clips, which is why those roofs do need maintenance.

Our roof is designed to easily accommodate solar panels. The roof is installed directly onto the existing roof – without a gap caused by strapping. That means it is very easy to install the solar panels right over it.

The other advantage is that with a disposable roof, you need to have the solar panels removed and re-installed every time you re-roof or do maintenance. Our roof does not require maintenance and does not need to be replaced for a life-time.

A new type of solar panel is being developed that will be glued directly onto metal roofs. You are maximizing your future options.

In most cases: no. There are zero benefits to removing the old shingles, and several benefits to leaving them:
  • You save the labour cost for removal.
  • It is an extra insulation layer.
  • It acts as an extra sound barrier.
  • The most important benefit of leaving the shingles, is because every time you remove them, the hundreds of nails keeping them in place are being torn out of the plywood. This leaves holes. And often, chunks of plywood come out.

With our roof, you can safely leave those shingles. Our underlay creates the perfect environment for the old shingles and for the plywood underneath. The special underlay can breathe. And while no water, ice or snow can penetrate it, moisture underneath can evaporate. Everything under the underlay will remain dry and breathable.

Metal roofs have been around since the mid 19th century, including the preferred interlocking system. Every aspect of a Roofs of Steel roof is based on what has been proven to work for a long time. Our roof is designed to not only withstand Canada’s climate, but also our extreme weather changes. With our lifetime, non-prorated warranty, you will never have to re-roof again.
Metal reflects 70% of the sun’s energy, which means less heat is transferred to your attic. The attic temperature needs to be the same as the temperature outside. If the attic is warmer, then this causes condensation which in turn can lead to mold. A metal roof greatly reduces the chances of this happening.

The Florida Solar Energy Center found that metal gained 34% less heat than asphalt shingles.

The Kynar500 finish used on a Roofs of Steel roof, is US Energy Star approved because it reflects so much heat.

Galvanization has been around since the mid 19th century. It is a coating method that prevents steel from rusting. A Roofs of Steel roof has been thickly galvanized on both sides.

Many regular metal roofs only have a thin layer of galvanization, which means that they often do rust. Ours is rated at G90. This translates into a long lifespan for your roof.

While regular metal roofs do fade, a Roofs of Steel roof has a thick, baked-in coating of Kynar500 that is extremely fade resistant. This is the highest quality finish in the industry and it is guaranteed against fading and chalking for decades.
A number of homeowners with either asphalt shingle or metal roofs are getting snow guards to break up the snow as it comes off the roof. With a metal roof, snow will no longer accumulate. It will come off in smaller batches. This again means less stress on your home! Whether to go with snow guards or not, depends on where people walk, and what your preference is. If your entrance is under a gable, then no snow should come down in that area. If there is no gable, then you have the option to install snow guards or not. Most people don’t.
